EUROCONTROL REPORTS STRONG TRAFFIC GROWTH AT UPPER AREA CONTROL CENTRE IN MAASTRICHT
- During the first half of the year, the Upper Area Control Centre (UAC) in Maastricht handled a traffic increase of 7.9%, EUROCONTROL announced today. This represents a traffic volume of some 670,000 flights for the period from January to June 2005. This strong growth spans the whole geographical area of the UAC.
Daily traffic hit new record levels on 1 July 2005, with 4,479 flights processed in one single day, representing an increase of 5.8 % on last year’s busiest day (4,235 flights processed on 10 September 2004). Despite the large increases in traffic, delays fell by more than 85%, to an average delay per flight of just 0.1 minute (or 6.1 seconds). This compares with an average delay per flight of 0.6 minute (or 40.9 seconds) during the same period in 2004.
Karl-Heinz Kloos, the Director of the Maastricht UAC, said:
“We are pleased to report that this excellent performance comes as a result of several capacity and efficiency-enhancing investments made during the course of last year. Besides providing a safe capacity increase in our already dense airspace, we continue to attach great importance to cost control. During the first half of the year, the total cost per flight hour controlled was reduced by almost 30% compared to the same period in 2004 and we hope to be able to report similar results at the end of the year. Our objective is to meet the needs of our customers as safely and efficiently as possible, while upholding investments in future systems and technologies.”
