In the night from 4 to 5 March 2006, Munich control centre took over the responsibility for the airspace which up until then had been controlled by Berlin control centre. This transfer of responsibility went without a hitch and according to plan. Now Munich is responsible for a horizontal area stretching from the German-Polish border to Leipzig and Erfurt, right down to Nürnberg in south Germany. In vertical terms, Munich is responsible for the airspace in this area up to approximately 8,600 m above sea level. Sixty-nine Berlin air traffic controllers now work in shifts at the DFS control centre at Munich Airport to handle aircraft in this airspace, in which almost 325,000 aircraft movements were controlled in 2005. In Munich, a total of 420 employees are responsible for the airspace stretching from Leipzig to Bolzano (Italy), and from Stuttgart to the Austrian border near Passau.

This transfer of control is part of a strategic plan developed and implemented by DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, which entails the reorganisation of the control centres and their airspaces.
